Hello, my name is Zakk, aka Z-Dubbz, a purveyor of dark prose, sweet whiskey and smooth yo-yos. From the beginning I’ve stated I am not a critic of horror fiction (or fiction in general), what I am is a fan. This is as true now as it ever was, I am a simple reader. Since my dear sweet grandmother bought me the mass market paperback of Stephen King’s The Dark Half nearly thirty years ago, I had found horror fiction to be a constant craving. I write “Simple reviews from a simple reader…” Meaning, quick & easily digested reviews from someone who loves genre fiction. I used to read and review books for “The Mouths of Madness Podcastshow” now I read for me. I’m pleased to meet you.
Zakk is a big dumb animal!
Review Submissions Guidelines:
My ratings and how I define them:
I don’t necessarily rate a book for quality, unless quality is a blatant factor, as I don’t feel that I’m the right person for that. I don’t have the schooling to consider myself an authority on what constitutes a quality read. The ratings I give are a definition my personal entertainment value and/ or level of involvement in a story. Know that my ratings are not Law, should never be considered Law, and most definitely are not be used to win an argument or sway someone else’s feelings. I’m just here to document my reading journey, and if you happen to find something that tickles your fancy, or better yet moves you like it does me, well that’ll be a fine moment.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This book got me straight in the feels, I feel like I’ve transcended beyond being a reader and have become an active participant and feel like I have a stake in the outcome. I won’t give this rating all Willy-nilly. A 5 star book is a book to be reread, revisited and is a book that I would gladly gift a friend. Authors of 5 star books go straight to the “must read” list.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rocked my socks off. While I may not have made a personal connection to the book I thoroughly enjoyed it. Authors of 4 star books, I would immediately peruse back catalog titles for something else to sink my eyes into. A 4 star book is a book I’d feel comfortable recommending to the masses, and know that means a lot to me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had a lot of fun. There may be a few aspects that didn’t stoke the fire inside if me but overall I had a good time reading, and I would gladly read the author again. A 3 star book is a book that I would recommend to the right person, with the right fit.
⭐️⭐️This book got me straight in the mehs. This is a book that may have had aspects I liked, but overall it didn’t do it for me. I may have struggled to finish and I probably won’t recommend it unless I know specifically that it is in someone’s wheelhouse. I may read the author again.
⭐️ Get off my lawn. While there is enough here to keep me from closing the book and walking away, something within these pages made me irritated, angry, insulted, or offended. A 1 star book is an author I may not read again, nor would I recommend it.
🚫⭐️A no-star rating is a DNF, did not finish. Typically a book that just didn’t grasp my attention or something about it didn’t jive with me. I’ll give a book 25%-30% to grasp me, somehow, someway. I feel that is a worthy effort, and depending on the size of the book, possibly generous. It happens sometimes, occasionally I’ll set a book down and come back to it later, see if a fresh set of eyes changes anything. Every reader is different and their cylinders fire in different ways. I would read the author again, unless it’s a repeat offence.
*Just know that I won’t argue a rating, (and specifically for the authors in the audience) nor will I be bullied/ chastised/ ridiculed into changing a rating. I am your target audience, I am your reader to lose, till the end of my reading days if need be.
