Zakk reviews We Are Always Watching by Hunter Shea

“Ex Libris The Eyes of Madness, simple reviews from a simple reader…”

Zakk reviews We Are Always Watching by Hunter Shea, 252 pages published by Sinister Grin Press March 1, 2017.

They’ve watched over the house for generations…

The move from New York to the decrepit Pennsylvania farmhouse is as bad as West Ridley thought it would be. His father’s crippling vertigo only seems to get worse, and even with his mother working herself to the bone, they’re out of money and options.

Grandpa Abraham is a drunk bastard and the living embodiment of the long neglected farmhouse. He claims the place is haunted. Ghosts roam the hall at night and their muffled cries fill the silence of warm, summer nights.

On the ceiling above West’s bed are the words WE SEE YOU. In a house plagued by death and mysterious visitations, West realizes something beyond the fiction of his favorite horror books has to be faced.

Dark secrets are buried deep, and there are Guardians who want to keep it that way. No matter where they go or what they do, West and his family know one thing… they are always watching.

More commonly known for his books about monsters, spirits or “mythical” (I’m a believer) creatures, We Are Always Watching feels like a great change of pace for Mr. Shea. Without going into spoiler territory, Hunter adds a superb human element to the frights experienced while reading. Based on a true events, We Are Always Watching drops a thick veil of dread and anxiety, pretty quickly, that holds up through out the remainder of the novel. Suspense ratchets as the mystery thickens keeping you (the reader) on your toes as the narrative unfolds. The scares in WAAW make the book feel like it can go in any number of ways, with the way it actually does go being very enjoyable and quite satisfying.

The unnerving narrative is carried and supported by a quality cast of characters. The Ridley family feel like an honest to goodness broken unit, the maladies they incur are easy to grasp and in a lot of ways trigger some issues that I experienced while growing up (broken families, setbacks, monkeys on backs, bastard patriarchal figures). Speaking of which, Grandpa Abraham is a real sonuva bitch! Just like…

We Are Always Watching is all mood, all the time. It’s a must read for Hunter Shea fans, a must read for horror fans in general.

I dug this book a ton and it gave me more anxiety than I am used to while reading. I even got up to check the locks a time or two while reading in the after hours. This is currently my favorite Hunter Shea book, you should read it.

Zakk is a big dumb animal!
